David Nolan Gallery at Art Basel 2013

June 13-16, 2013

David Nolan Gallery is delighted to announce its participation in Art Basel, 2013, on view to the public from June 13 to 16.

Our presentation will include important works on paper by classical Modern artists – Paul Cézanne, Fernand Léger and George Grosz – alongside a group of mid-century masters: Richard Artschwager, Robert Rauschenberg, Hans Bellmer, Wols and Eugen Schönebeck. Among these, we will show a significant work by Schönebeck (from 1963), which signaled an era of ambitious figurative painting in Germany following the Second World War. Altogether, these provide a context for our display of later-20th century (and more recent) artists, including Carroll Dunham, Martin Kippenberger, Barry Le Va, Jim Nutt and Alexander Ross.

To coincide with an exhibition at the Vitra Design Museum, we will be showing rarely-seen architectural and travel drawings by Louis Kahn.

At the fair we will introduce two artists who are new to the gallery: Julia Fish and David Hartt. Hartt’s photographs (from the Stray Light series currently on view at the Studio Museum in Harlem) offer a meditative glimpse of the iconic Johnson Publishing Company in Chicago. His images of these headquarters (designed by African American architect, John Moutoussamy in 1971) present a fascinating cultural and historical time capsule. Fish, meanwhile, focuses on another interior space, centering her practice on a series of “thresholds” within her own home in Chicago.

From Berlin-based, Jorinde Voigt, we will be showing a unique sculpture (comprised of 25 aluminum rods), entitled Botanic Code, which charts the artist’s path through a local botanic garden, using an algorithm to record of her spontaneous perception of color. In this subjective vein, the artist has produced two new drawings for the fair, entitled Emotional Spectrum.

On the occasion of the 55th Venice Biennale, the gallery is also pleased to announce the participation of two of our artists. “When Attitudes Become Form: Bern 1969/Venice 2013” on view at the Fondazione Prada (through November 3) includes work by Richard Artschwager; while Gavin Turk has produced a site-specific project, entitled Vanacular, on view at the Gervasuti Foundation (through November 24). Based on the artist’s ongoing preoccupation with the automobile in British society, this project is closely linked to our presentation of Tract – a painted bronze exhaust pipe, housed in a vitrine.

The 44th edition of Art Basel will take place from June 13 to 16, 2013, with preview days on Tuesday June 11 and Wednesday June 12. For more information, visit the Art Basel website.
