"Drawing Redefined presents the distinctive drawing practices of five contemporary artists: Roni Horn, Esther Kläs, Joëlle Tuerlinckx, Richard Tuttle and Jorinde Voigt, who have maintained a discipline of drawing as a constituent element of their artistic practice. Drawing affirms these artists’ tactile engagement of the world and often provides a forum for experimentation, study, and expansion of a vocabulary of images that recur in their art. In these artists' hands, the traditional practice of drawing is transformed into an exploration of time and space manifest in forms beyond traditional linear representation in photographic, painterly, and sculptural work."

Ciprian Mureşan is the subject of a solo exhibition at The Ludwig Museum of Contemporary Art in Budapest, curated by Krisztina Szipőcs. From the museum's press release:
"Ciprian Mureșan belongs to the generation of the post-Communist regime and is, in a post-conceptual manner, preoccupied with the historical and political fallout for his country, Romania. Mureșan appropriates historical, social and cultural references (essentially artistic, literary and cinematographic), which he re-contextualizes. He analyses the mechanisms of cultural diffusion; the ambivalent, if not contrary relationships between memories of recent history and those of actual experience, in addition to the relationships between political power, religious power, and civil society. His works allude to iconic works from the history of modernity, while addressing questions ranging from the jolts of contemporary society and the fall of utopias to the impact of new technologies on our visual culture, by way of the fetishization of cartoons and the relationship of civil society to different forms of power. He deals with history, religion and art using simple gestures and methods from popular culture with the same quasi-expiatory manner, while restoring the importance of personal experience and expression."

Rooted in a fascination with the human form, Wardell Milan’s works on paper frequently depict boxers or bodybuilders, displaying figures in contorted states or pushed to the extreme. In his viscerally rendered charcoal drawings, Milan distills these forms into near-abstract arrangements, highlighting areas of physical struggle, while leaving other passages sketched out or blank.

David Hartt has been named as one of the four artists in consideration for the 2014 Aimia | Art Gallery of Ontario Photography Prize. The other nominees are Lisa Oppenheim, Nandipha Mntambo, and Elad Lassry.
The show is organized in collaboration with the Estate of Ian Hamilton Finlay and is curated by his long time associate Pia Simig.
In his first exhibition in the Middle East, the show includes tapestries, neon installations, engraved poems on glass, sculptures and printed works from the 1960s to 2006, as well as wall paintings installed by his long time collaborator, Les Edge. Finlay’s poetic work with its focus on the language and beauty of the letter is particularly relevant to our region, where the tradition of calligraphy and the rich history of the written word are integral to Middle Eastern artistic canons. The work highlights the letter, making it the subject, just as the Arabic calligraphers have done for centuries.

Carroll Dunham’s world of animated line is populated by organic shapes and cartoon-like creatures. Dunham’s drawings demonstrate the artist’s dexterity in thin lines, delicate shadings, aggressive smudges, and smeary black washes. This show is about the essence of drawing. At the same time, it celebrates Dunham’s ability to manipulate simple materials and lines in ways that have engaged viewers for more than three decades.
This One's Optimistic: Pincushion" curated by Cary Smith is a densely hung, salon style exhibition that includes paintings and drawings by 38 contemporary artists, all of whom are known for their excellence in making work that leans heavily towards abstraction. Their styles are vastly different and will, in close proximity, create a wide-ranging visual experience, which can be seen as a current reflection of a slice of what is going on within the art community. A unifying theme among all the artwork is that of an intuitive, positive, human force—one that is authentic, smart, original, and inventive—and always with a warm beating heart.

On May 20th at 6pm The MCA Chicago will host the premier of Hairy Who & The Chicago Imagists, followed by a discussion with artists Gladys Nilsson and Art Green, director Leslie Buchbinder, writer John Corbett, and MCA curator Lynne Warren.
The film is a lavishly-illustrated romp through Chicago Imagist art: the Second City scene that challenged Pop Art’s status quo in the 1960s, then faded from view. Forty years later, its funk and grit inspires artists from Jeff Koons to Chris Ware, making the Imagists the most famous artists you never knew.

The exhibition "A Few Grams of Red, Yellow, Blue. New Romanian Art", curated by Ewa Gorządek and designed by Jarosław Kozakiewicz, is a comprehensive presentation of the latest works from Romanian artists of the younger generation, who since the mid-2000s have begun to manifest their presence in the art scene, locally as well as on an international scale. This thirty-something generation grew up under communism, witnessed the breakdown and collapse of the system, coupled with experiencing the violent invasion of consumer culture in an indigenous society. Consequently, it is through this peerless perspective that the artists formulate their thoughts and comments on the observed changes.

The exhibition features over 135 works spanning six decades, including sculptures, paintings, drawings, photographs, and prints. Often associated with Pop, Minimalism, and Conceptual art, his work never fit neatly into any of these categories. His artistic practice consistently explored questions regarding his own visual and physical engagement with the world; his objects straddle the line between illusion and reality. The exhibition reveals the artist’s prescience in his career-long commitment to exploring the profound effect photography and technology have had in transforming our engagement with the world. His work has responded to and challenged how these media—and our experience of things as images rather than as things in themselves—have shifted human experience from being rooted in primary physical experience to a knowledge mediated by secondary sources such as newspapers, television, and the Internet.

The 11-story Modernist building, home to Jet and Ebony magazines starting in 1971, was heralded as the first major downtown Chicago building designed by an African-American architect since the 18th century. Granted unprecedented access to film and photograph in this John Moutoussamy–designed building, Hartt beautifully and earnestly records the time-capsule nature of the space, which meticulously retains Arthur Elrod’s original 1971 interior design. The building was purpose-built as the headquarters of this important publishing company, and its interior is a clear and exuberant expression of Black taste, resolutely modern, colorful, and complex, a pure expression of founder John Johnson’s vision of what a leading Black-owned business can be.

To commemorate the one year anniversary of Hurricane Sandy—and the resiliency of New York City’s arts community, which was hit especially hard by the storm—the Dedalus Foundation, the Brooklyn Rail, and the Jamestown Charitable Foundation join with Industry City Associates to present a nearly 100,000 square foot exhibition entitled Come Together: Surviving Sandy, Year 1. The exhibition will take place at Industry City, a hub of creative manufacturing and innovation in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. Centered on the work of artists directly affected by Sandy, the exhibition will also feature work inspired by and referring to the storm, along with work by artists who were invited to participate in the spirit of solidarity. In addition, the two-month exhibition will include musical performances, poetry readings, film screenings, and other cultural events. The Brooklyn Rail’s radio partner, ARTonAIR.org (the radio station of the Clocktower Gallery), will provide official radio coverage and music selections for the exhibition.
Industry City has been involved with Hurricane Sandy relief since Sandy hit. At the time of the storm, Industry City Associates donated the use of 18,000 square feet of space to volunteer conservators who worked on the recovery of hundreds of works of art.

David Hartt has been working with photographs for many years, attracted to the social, cultural, political, and economic complexities of the subjects he captures and rendering them with a cool, dispassionate eye. Stray Light includes a film displayed in a room that has been carpeted in the style of his subject, the 1971 Johnson Publishing Company building in Chicago, as well as a group of four photographs in an adjacent room in the North Galleries. The building was purpose-built as the headquarters of this important Black-owned publishing company, made famous by its Jet and Ebony magazine titles as well as by its role as a leading arbiter of African American taste and culture during the latter half of the twentieth century. Hartt’s work raises questions about the commingling of the personal and the public, and highlights the narratives and ideologies that underlie the Johnson firm while assessing their lasting impact on today’s society.

Our presentation will include important works on paper by classical Modern artists –Paul Cézanne, Fernand Léger and George Grosz – alongside a group of mid-century masters: Richard Artschwager, Robert Rauschenberg, Hans Bellmer, Wols and Eugen Schönebeck. Among these, we will show a significant work by Schönebeck (from 1963), which signaled an era of ambitious figurative painting in Germany following the Second World War. Altogether, these provide a context for our display of later-20th century (and more recent) artists, including Carroll Dunham, Martin Kippenberger, Barry Le Va, Jim Nutt and Alexander Ross.

Vanacular
A project for the 55th Venice Biennale
Private view: 6pm Tuesday 28 May
On the occasion of the 55th Venice Biennale, the Gervasuti Foundation is proud to present Vanacular, a site-specific project by British artist Gavin Turk. This installation is comprised of a selection of works based on the artist’s ongoing Transit Disaster series. The title is a pun on ‘van’ and ‘vernacular‘, a metaphor implying the social connotations that the iconic white Ford van of the ‘90s represents in British society and a paradoxical play on the Venetian urban context, a city without roads. Vanacularreconfigures a language of identity between that which is considered an accident of fate and that which is invested with intent, both in art and in life.

This display focuses on Ian Hamilton Finlay’s recourse to a neo-classical idiom and his creation of sculptures that, by their conjunction of word and image, play with an emblematic use of reference and metaphor whose adopted form is most often that of the idyll.
Boat names evoke the pastoral activity of fishing and the landscape of the sea; the paraphernalia of naval warfare describes a bucolic idyll expressed as if a shaded garden temple; instruments of revolution and agriculture - a gun, a drum, a guillotine blade, a hoe, a spade - similarly harness the language of the seasonal metamorphosis in which a garden, like society, is ordered and celebrated through themes suggested by the French Revolution.
Drawn wholly from work by Ian Hamilton Finlay (1925-2006) that is held within Tate’s collection, the display juxtaposes neon, wood, stone and bronze sculptures with printed works on paper - prints, as well as books and cards.

The Irish Museum of Modern Art will hold a mid-career retrospective of Alice Maher's work.
"Becoming is a mid-career retrospective of the work of Alice Maher, one of Ireland’s most respected and influential artists. Including painting, sculpture, photography and animation, the exhibition will include seminal works such as Berry Dress, 1994, from the IMMA Collection; Familiar, 1995, from the Crawford Art Gallery, and many other works held in IMMA’s own Collection. The title Becoming, hints at some of the main preoccupations of the artist and the themes that will be explored in the exhibition. A dress can be becoming or flattering; one’s behaviour can become you, as you act in an appropriate way within a social construct; but becoming also points at a point of transformation where something becomes something else, Maher’s work has always placed itself at this nexus, a point of metamorphosis where there is continuous flux as states shift and the familiar becomes otherworldly or unknown - where the inappropriate and the unacceptable are constantly called into play."

The artists in The Imminence of Poetics are all contemporary: the imminence of poetics is nothing other than this: there, in their niche, becoming contemporary: greeting the dawn with shadows in the flight of light, with the word on the tip of one’s tongue with sound or silence, and all their potential."

Jorinde Voigt will be included in the group show "Turbulence" at the Espace Culturel Louis Vuitton. From the press release:
"Today, with the help of new technologies or rudimentary techniques, virtual images or traditional line drawings, artists from different horizons are exploring the multiple aesthetic and philosophical possibilities of the notion of turbulence. They have also developed various systems of graphic, pictorial or sculptural notation enabling them to 'chart' these spontaneous and disconcerting movements of matter.
"The immersive space and video installations of Pascal Haudressy and Ryoichi Kurokawa, which mix images, sounds and sculptures, the blowers and turbines of Attila Csörgo, Zilvinas Kempinas, Petroc Sesti or Jorinde Voigt, which generate whirlwinds or whirlpools, the apparently liquefying wall of Loris Cecchini, Sachiko Kodama’s sculptures, constantly changing along with variations in magnetic fields, Élias Crespin’s mechanical waves and flows, Miguel Chevalier’s swirling field of colour to explore with the eye and the body, Angela Bulloch’s pixel mutations: this exhibition, pervaded by varying currents, brings together the work of 11 artists of different nationalities, all of whom explore in myriad ways (via machines, images, physical processes) the art of playing with turbulence."

Richard Artschwager will be included in the group exhibition "Scapes" at the Denver Art Museum. From the press release:
"Landscapes, seascapes, even skyscapes and dreamscapes, occupy our imagination. These worlds are presented in drawings by 16 artists on view in the works-on-paper gallery. Some works convey a sense of place using no more than a simple graphic line, as demonstrated by Roy Lichtenstein and Saul Steinberg; others inject atmospheric effects as seen in examples by Richard Artschwager, Jennifer Bartlett, and Alexis Rockman. Keith Hale's huge ethereal nightscape conjures up the magic of light in the middle of the night. Still others connect to Colorado, like this drawing by Christo. Come escape to worlds envisioned by these contemporary masters."

Public Art Fund's exhibition "Common Ground," on display now in City Hall Park, includes a sculpture by Ian Hamilton Finlay.
"The late Scottish artist is best known for 'Little Sparta,' the remarkable garden near Edinburgh filled with sculptures and pavilions that he created with his wife, Sue Finlay, between 1966 and 2006. He was fascinated by the poetic expression of philosophical ideas, often inscribing texts in stone to be placed in garden settings. The text in this work, which he translated into Latin, is credited to Louis de Saint-Just (1767-1794), a leader of the French Revolution. It reads, 'The present order is the disorder of the future.'"

Family Matters: The Family in British Art is an ambitious touring exhibition that shows how the subject of the family has been and continues to be a challenging yet enduring subject for artists. Divided thematically, the exhibition showcases the best of British art with works by David Hockney, Anthony van Dyck, William Hogarth and Tracey Emin. Contemporary and historic works are juxtaposed to show how the traditional family portrait has been replaced with a more frank portrayal of the family. Formal portraits were frequently staged for political or personal purposes, whereas the more recent works offer a view that can only be described as ‘behind the scenes’ creating a tension between the public and private portrayal of the family.

After living for almost 50 years behind the Iron Curtain, in 1989 they woke up in a new world, exposed to radically different modes of being and values. Almost everything changed: the space of experience, the radius of activity, holiday plans and even life plans. Seeking to make sense of the chaotic present, people have started to build a new logic for the future. How? Through routines of coexistence, of exchange, of everyday life.

Since 1990, Jim Nutt has focused exclusively on female heads in spare line drawings and rich, detailed paintings. This exhibition is a retrospective of Jim Nutt's work that emphasizes the development of these important paintings through their precedents in his own work. Acknowledging the groundswell in interest in this unique American artist's work, this will be the first major presentation of Nutt in over a decade. Nutt's history as an important artist dates to the mid-1960s where in Chicago he was a chief instigator of the irreverent "Hairy Who" group, now better known as the imagists.
While it was undoubtedly inspired by mid-twentieth century pop culture, especially comic books, advertisements, jukebox and pinball machine art, and street signs, Nutt's art also explores the formal devices and techniques of historical painting. Northern European portraiture of the 15th and 16th century; Colonial American painting; the color and line explorations of Henri Matisse and Joan Miró; the quirky individualism of such artists as John Graham, Max Ernst, Arshile Gorky, and H. C. Westermann all offered lessons as Nutt has matured over four decades of artistic development. A fully illustrated catalogues is planned. This exhibition is organized by MCA Curator Lynne Warren.

UNDONE
Exploring a new mood in contemporary sculpture
29th September 2010 - 2nd January 2011
Contemporary artists engaging with the materiality and process of making sculpture.
Undone is concerned with sculpture that lies somewhere on the threshold between the made and unmade. This fascinating exhibition brings together a large body of recent work by international contemporary artists and in doing so identifies a shared aesthetic that characterises the work of this otherwise disparate group of artists. These ‘homespun’ sculptures, made from readily-available materials by artists from Europe, the US and Brazil seem to reflect a new age of austerity.

Sandra Vásquez de la Horra is her name. She has Chilean nationality but has been living in Düsseldorf since 1995. Her work is 'modest'. It is small-scale and concerns drawings. But, good heavens – when she hangs those drawings on the wall! Then they become part of a greater whole; a chain that can stretch over the entire wall. Her world is populated by bidden and unbidden guests. She welcomes them in, without respect to persons. It must be said, however, that once they are caught in her net, there is no escape. Everything and everybody is 'sealed' beneath a thin layer of beeswax, which is applied over all the drawings. Something that was initially fluid and therefore malleable suddenly appears unmanageable; in readiness for eternity.

This show with over 15 works is Ciprian Mureșan's first solo exhibition in an art institution context. His works have been displayed recently in the Centre Pompidou (Paris), the Renaissance Society (Chicago), and the New Museum (New York), as well as at the 17th Sydney Biennale. In 2009, he was one of the artists representing Romania at the 53rd Venice Biennale. Mureșan is a member of the editorial team of the art and culture journal IDEA arts+society, one of the most influential art journals in Eastern Europe.
Recent work by Mureșan (born 1977 in Cluj) ranges from drawings and animated films to photography, sculpture, and video. Taking as his point of departure the changes in post-Communist states after 1989, he addresses issues of cultural identity and collectivization processes in his works. Throughout, he draws on art history, which leads him to idiosyncratic interpretations of the present.

DESIRE
Desire is a complex human emotion and a driving force in our lives from childhood through old age. We all can recall examples of literature, film, and music that are rife with expressions of desire. But how do contemporary visual artists portray desire, and all its attendant psychological states—anticipation, arousal, longing, regret, and so on? Opening in February, The Blanton will present a major exhibition of recent works in all media by an international roster of contemporary artists who have investigated notions of desire.

"There is a small gallery devoted to six works by Jim Nutt, an outstanding but underappreciated painter, native to Chicago, whose perverse portraits and strung-out figures reflect the influence of local Surrealist collections like the Bergman."
