Press Release

David Nolan Gallery at Art Basel (June 19-22, 2014)

David Nolan Gallery is pleased to announce its participation at Art Basel with a dynamic display of contemporary and historical artists. The booth is headlined with focused presentations of work by Richard Artschwager, Carroll Dunham, Mel Kendrick, Jim Nutt and Jorinde Voigt, while a single wall containing drawings by nearly 20 artists is designed to illustrate the range and breadth of the medium.

An important group of works on paper by Richard Artschwager, ranging in date from 1969 through to 2011, shows the artist in various experimental phases of his career. Jim Nutt, a founding member of "The Hairy Who", is represented by two exceptional drawings from 1975 alongside earlier works and three more recent portraits. Carroll Dunham and Mel Kendrick occupy another area of the booth, with a 1984 wood painting by Dunham and three large mahogany sculptures by Kendrick as highlights.

The wall of drawings is loosely divided into three sections. Different ways of depicting the human figure are the concerns of Georg Baselitz and his contemporary, Eugen Schönebeck, whose drawings are paired with those of Christina Ramberg, Nancy Spero and Rosemarie Trockel. Detailed studies of interior spaces link drawings by Artschwager, William Copley and Julia Fish. In a third section, explorations in collage are played out in works by Joseph Cornell, Max Ernst, Robert Rauschenberg and Gabriel Orozco.

A substantial area of our booth is devoted to the work of Berlin-based artist, Jorinde Voigt whose drawings are the subject of the current exhibition in our gallery. The six large-scale drawings in Basel (from 2013) form part of the same series, inspired by the writings of Niklas Luhmann, analyzing the history of love in Western Europe. Alongside these works, we will present two sculptural installations, which mark a bold new direction for the artist. A new book on the Luhmann works, entitled Superpassion, will also be unveiled at the fair.

The 45th edition of Art Basel will take place from June 19 to 22, with preview days on Tuesday, June 17 and Wednesday, June 18. On Thursday, June 19 there will be screenings of two films by David Hartt, The Republic (2014) and Stray Light (2011). For more information, visit the Art Basel website.
