Press Release

David Nolan Gallery is pleased to announce a solo presentation of work by the British artist, Gavin Turk (b. 1967) at The Art Show (Booth A8).

In recent years, Turk has become preoccupied with the theme of transportation and the image of the white van – a smaller-sized commercial vehicle, which stands as a symbol of “working class Britishness.” Measuring over 20 feet in width, a highlight of our display is Large Transit Disaster which references Warhol’s “Death and Disaster” series. As with Warhol’s originals, Turk anaesthetizes violence through multiple reproductions and the use of bright, saturated colors. Elsewhere, Turk extends the “transit” theme with Pipe Dream, a Venetian blown-glass rendering of an exhaust pipe, and Transit Compression – the physical presence of a pulverized Ford Transit van, recalling iconic works by César.

A group of bronze sculptures reflect the artist’s affection for everyday objects – a styrofoam cup, a burnt match, an apple core and a brick – which are meticulously painted to look like the real thing. Invoking the artistic legacy of Jasper John, Turk elevates these discarded objects into the realm of art.
