David Nolan Gallery is pleased to announce our participation at Frieze Masters, 2013.
Our presentation focuses on the cross-pollination between artists in Europe and the
United States, beginning in the early 20th century with Max Beckmann and George Bellows. A group of important works by Marcel Duchamp, a watercolor by Beatrice Wood (Duchamp's American muse), and three photographs by Man Ray strike a surrealist note, which is later reengaged by Christina Ramberg, William Copley and others.
Many striking historical cross-references are to be found in our presentation: from a collage by Kurt Schwitters and its later impact on Robert Rauschenberg, to the Viennese Actionists
(among them, Günter Brus and Hermann Nitsch) who paved the way for Californian artist, Paul McCarthy. An intense and sexually explicit drawing by Hans Bellmer from 1946 is in correspondence with a similarly charged drawing by Carroll Dunham from the early 80s, while an explosive painting by James Ensor is discovered in a new context beside works by Jim Nutt from the mid-60s and 70s.
Key German and American figures anchor the display. A pseudo-surrealist landscape by Richard Artschwager, a self-portrait by Andy Warhol and two works by Richard Prince form a rich dialogue with Sigmar Polke, Rosemarie Trockel, Arnulf Rainer and “hotel drawings” by Martin Kippenberger.
