Born to a German father and Russian mother in Washington, D. C.

1933
Moved with his family to New Mexico, keenly interested in art and science.

1941
Enrolled in Cornell University to study chemistry.

1942-46
WWII service in Europe, received a superficial wound in the Battle of the Bulge.

1948
B.A. from Cornell University.

1949
Studied at the studio school of Amedée Ozenfant, supported by odd jobs, including working as a baby photographer. Caught between choice of pursuing a career as an artist or entering various trades.

1953
Apprenticed to a cabinetmaker; designed and produced first furniture.

1958
Loft fire, financial difficulties.

1959
First exhibition in New York.
