Artist Bio

Visual artist Alice Maher was educated at Crawford College Cork, University of Ulster and San Francisco Art Institute. She holds a B.A and M.F.A. Her first major solo show, titled ‘familiar’ was held at the Douglas Hyde Gallery in 1994. In that same year she represented Ireland at the Sao Paolo Biennale. She has participated in many solo and group exhibitions since then, both in Ireland and abroad. A survey show of her work was presented at the Brighton and Hove Museum in 2007 and included many signature pieces, such as ‘The House of Thorns’, ‘Berry Dress’ and ‘Mnemosyne’ (a bed of ice). Her practice comprises many different media including drawing, sculpture, installation, print, photography, and more recently animation. Her work can be seen in the collections of Irish Museum of Modern Art, The British Museum, The Hugh Lane Municipal Gallery, Crawford Art Gallery, Deutsche Bank, The Fogg Museum, An Chomhairle Ealaion, the Grunwald Center for Graphic Arts at the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, and the Museum of Fine Arts Boston. She is represented by Green on Red Gallery Dublin, Purdy Hicks Gallery London, and David Nolan Gallery New York. Maher lives and works in Ireland and is a member of Aosdana. A retrospective of her work will be presented at the Irish Museum of Modern Art in 2012.
